Crescent Woodcraft - An Artisan In Wood

The expression “An Artisan in Wood” best describes the spirit and aims of my work at Crescent Woodcraft.  I use my skills with wood and other materials to create contemporary and attractive pieces for today’s modern homes.  I also employ a wide variety of interesting finishes in my work in an effort to create appealing characteristics.  Most importantly my aim is to blend sound craftsmanship with good design.

Design

It does not have to be difficult to achieve good design.  Simplicity has become my byword so in consequence I aim to produce clean, sharp pieces.  In addition I endeavour to produce designs that are simple in style and avoid unnecessary embellishment.  For me the pure form of a piece is one of the most important factors and something I constantly strive to achieve.

I try to fuse classical forms into stylish, modern products and take my inspiration from around the world.  In the gallery I have showcased a broad selection of my work that I hope will be pleasing to the eye but then you will be the best judge.

Process

Usually I only make single unique pieces but there are exceptions.  I occasionally make multiple pieces perhaps in sets in pairs and sometimes sets of three but rarely more.  In other words the key is quality not quantity

I do take commissions and will happily discuss your specific needs.

Materials

At Crescent Woodcraft I use materials that are from sustainable sources much of which is obtained locally around my home in Warwickshire although the exotic hardwoods that I utilise  come from the far corners of the globe.  Wood is a valuable resource and one that should not be wasted.  I also recycle as much as possible from discarded timber or perhaps from old furniture.  It is crucial In this age of environmental concerns to preserve as much as possible and value our precious resources.

Crescent Woodcraft - Philosophy

Millions of homes throughout the world have humble turned wooden items; perhaps bowls, pots or boxes etc.  They are put to use as every day domestic objects.  This is almost certainly the reason for woodturning to be associated more with function rather than form and beauty.  My philosophy  is to create hand. crafted pieces that as well as often having a practical use are also decorative in their own right and can be displayed as such.  I am satisfied if I can achieve a pleasing sense of elegance in the forms that emerge.
