The Story - History

My passion for working with wood is a long story.  In fact I started at a  very young age and this has continued throughout my. life.  Many twists and turns have occurred over the years.  These vary from designing and making furniture, antique restoration, boatbuilding and not the least woodturning.  I worked in the control and automation industry for most of my professional life so my private passions had to take a back seat.  I resumed my earlier activities with a fresh verve after I took retirement.  My primary focus now is woodturning.

My small workshop in rural Warwickshire was created out of two converted pig-sties.  Although modest in size it is reasonably well equipped.  My choice of lathe was determined in part by the fact that I am left handed.  As a result it was necessary to have a machine that had a rotating headstock.  The primary focus of my work these days is woodturning although I continue to make furniture, usually commissioned.

Philosophy

I strive to combine clean, simple and elegant designs into well crafted pieces that would grace the modern home.  The focus is on pure form to create discrete and functional objects.  The pieces avoid unnecessary embellishment and allow the natural beauty of the wood  to stand out.

I hope to bring out the best from the wide range of timbers that are available.  Many of these are home grown but I also use more exotic pieces from the far corners of the globe.  I ensure that these materials are either from sustainable sources or have been obtained by recycling.

Inspiration

I constantly look for inspiration and ideas in the world around me but in addition try to maintain originality in my work.  Likewise, exploration of the vast source of different cultures available provide a depth of inspiration.

I have taken motivation from past woodturners such as John Hunnex. His informative publications have proved a valuable source.
