At Crescent Woodcraft I create a wide range of handcrafted bowls, platters and as well as being pleasing to the eye. My goal is to retain the natural appeal of the work but also to preserve its functionality. My objective here is to demonstrate the diversity in design and also materials that can be achieved.
Easily maintained food safe finishes are applied where necessary but equally do not compromise the ornamental value of the work.

This contemporary bowl is made of an exotic tropical hardwood, bubinga. I have applied a lacquer to give a durable finish that also gives the surface a rich, mellow lustre. The finish is food safe since it may be used for consumables.
Cherry displays a warm honey-like glow when polished. I have finished the work with a durable lacquer and dulled it before waxing it to give it a warm sheen.
I turned this bowl in sycamore and gave it an angular appearance. It was then burnished and a matt wax finish was applied to produce a warm glow.
I turned this dish in cherry. The French would call this type of vessel a “vides poches,” something which to empty the contents of your pockets at the end of the day. Perhaps it could be a bedroom item. I finished the dish with a melamine lacquer that was dulled and finally waxed.
These pieces are primarily decorative. However, they do have practical uses.
The bowl was turned from Padauk, a tropical hardwood, and then given a melamine finish and waxed. When first exposed to air, Padauk is a striking red colour but over time it mellows to give the piece a rich exotic feel.
